At Waterloo Primary, our music curriculum is fully inclusive and intends to inspire creativity, develop self-expression and encourage our children on their musical journeys. Music is a means by which we strengthen our bond as a school and connect with our local community. We hope to foster a lifelong love of music and broaden the children’s cultural understanding by exposing them to a diverse range of high quality musical experiences. By listening and responding to different musical styles and by developing as singers, performers and composers, all children will be able to become confident, reflective musicians.
The aims of our Music curriculum are to develop pupils who:
At Pudsey Waterloo, children are also encouraged to develop their sense of musicality. Children are offered opportunities throughout their time at school to foster and develop a love for music. This includes listening and appraising live music performances covering a range of genres. From year 3, children also learn a musical instrument and this supports their musicianship when progressing into secondary school.
Children are encouraged to develop their performance skills, and they are given many opportunities to perform for their grown-ups. Each class performs by either singing or playing an instrument in their class assembly. The children also enjoy performing as part of Christmas celebrations, either in school or at Pudsey Parish Church. The residents of the local nursing home enjoy listening to and seeing our choir at Christmas time as do the local community when we have performed at Pudsey Lights Switch On. Children in UKS2 enjoy delivering a whole school performance on guitars at the end of the year as it gives them the opportunity to show what children will be able to do as they move through school.
