Pudsey Waterloo Primary School

Music at Pudsey Waterloo

At Pudsey Waterloo every child engages with Music on a weekly basis through the curriculum, assemblies and a variety of extra-curricular activities we have on offer.

We follow the National Curriculum guidelines and plan to ensure that children have a varied and engaging musical experiences. Across the year all children will experience composing and performing their own music, listening to a range of music and developing an understanding of musical notation and terminology.  Where possible music is linked to the topic that the year group is investigating.

Foundation Stage

Singing and music are part of the everyday experience for our youngest children.  We try and sing at every opportunity to support routines, new topics and children’s developing Literacy and Numeracy skills. Each week we learn a new song that children sing at the Celebration Assembly on a Friday morning.

Children in Reception also have a weekly music session where instruments are introduced and children explore how they can play them and develop their early musical skills linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1 children explore how they can make and combine sounds with a range of instruments and consider the appropriate musical vocabulary that accompanies this. Children continue to sing on a regular basis and listen to range of music. Year 1 join in with whole school assemblies and learn our school song for the first time.

Year 2 have the opportunity to join in with a rhythm club during their lunchtime.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2 children build on their previous experiences by looking into the history of music, play and performing solo and ensemble and looking into the construction of music in more depth. There are also more opportunities to take part in musical extra-curricular activities.
