Art and Design at Pudsey Waterloo

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

Pablo Picasso

L.Q: Can I roll, pinch and fold paper? Year 1 manipulated paper to create 'Animal Sculptures'.

At Pudsey Waterloo we believe that art, craft and design matters to all children and it is essential that every child has the opportunity to engage with visual culture. Children deserve to experience every aspect of the subject by becoming practitioners, critical audiences and consumers of the arts.

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination in children of all ages and abilities.  It provides each child with the opportunity to look at their environment, ask questions and respond in a way that taps in to their senses.

L.Q: Can I use watercolour paint to produce washes for backgrounds then add detail? Year 2

At Pudsey Waterloo every child receives a curriculum that develops their skills, knowledge and understanding in order to experiment, invent and create. From Nursery children are taught skills such as mark making and colour mixing, as well as taking the time to evaluate their own work by saying what they like or may want to improve. As they move through school their skills set develop alongside their knowledge and understanding of the subject and they are given opportunity to express themselves through their work.

You don’t have to be ‘good at art’ to enjoy, achieve and be confident. We believe that art and design makes a positive contribution to a child’s learning and allows them to be inspired and enjoy without the pressures of getting something ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.

L.Q: Can I replicate some of the techniques used by Henri Matisse? Year 4 explored abstract pieces created by Henri Matisse and produced their own 'Snail' using the same techniques.
